THE "DARSENA" AND THE "NAVIGLI"
The "Darsena" and the "Navigli"
The Naviglio Grande is a canal joining the Ticino river to the Porta Ticinese dock, also known as the "Darsena". It was the first artificial canal in Europe and the most important of the Milan "Navigli" (canals). In 1603 the Spanish governer of Milan De Fuente transformed the Porta Ticinese dock and the small lake of Sant'Eustorgio into Milan port. There Milanese citizens could, swim, fish and see the big boats coming from the river Ticino into Milan canals. Today the Navigli and Darsena district is one of the most lively of Milan, very popular for its happy nightlife.
This last meets Via Montenapoleone at Piazza San Babila. Streets inside this area include Via Santo Spirito, Via Gesù, Via Sant'Andrea, Via Bagutta.
